VEILED SHADOWS, 2010
This short film deals with the destabilization of identity and is positioned on the edge between the virtual and the actual. Characters interact in a mundane way and represent an externalization of the agitated psyche of the protagonist as viewed through her interaction with a television. Played by several actors on stage, glamour and absurdity become a metaphor for this over exteriorization.
EVERYTHING FOR NOTHING, 2009
Three channel video installation. Metaphorically charged imagery, memory and sound, are used to speed up or slow down natural processes so that they become abstracted. This film reveals a harem of nubile young women, led by a matriarch, navigating a cool, internal space of shifting perceptions, where sleep, dream, and ritual blur together.
NUDE QUINCEANERA, 2009
I photographed local teenage Latina models at the famous Mission glamour portrait studio, Dore Studio. I am interested in replacing the traditional clothing worn in the glamour studio, which would include extravagant Quinceañera, Sweet Sixteen and prom dresses, with the “nude suit”. The nude body suit presents the viewer with a pared down view of the teenager, disassociated from the accoutrements of consumer culture. The American Apparel brand “nude” colored suit also raises questions about race and identity.
THE YACHT (SALTY LADY), 2008
This two channel video installation deals with identity, alienation and a search for meaning in life from one bourgeois woman’s perspective. The two characters, performed by the artist, presented in this video speak in utter banalities, although their musings are supposed to be deep and meaningful. One can never get beyond the screen of the persona, the façade. The projections are larger than life and displayed across from each other, thus stressing their reflexivity.
THE HEARING VOICES MOVEMENT, 2008
“The Hearing Voices Movement” video project began as an exploration into my subconscious, a sort of schizophrenic interior mindscape. I used imagery from dreams in an attempt to try to collage a video in a disconnected way. From the dreams I elaborated on themes of frustration, confusion, and longing.
KARAOKE QUEENZ, 2008
Multiple channel video installation. The artist sings power ballads in front of projected YouTube videos of female singers whom she admires.
OH MY GOD, 2007
Single-channel video. Found footage from the FOX reality television show, "The Swan." The artist edited three seasons of the program at the moment of the final reveal: contestants have not been able to look in a mirror for three months and have had multiple cosmetic surgery operations.
